Google Maps is adding Ask Maps, a new Gemini AI-powered feature that lets users search for places, activities, and travel ideas through natural conversations directly inside the app.
Google has released a major AI upgrade to Google Maps, integrating its Gemini model to make place searches more intuitive. The update adds a conversational feature named Ask Maps along with a new Immersive Navigation system designed to make navigation more intelligent and interactive.
The integration aims to transform Google Maps from a traditional navigation tool into an AI-driven discovery platform that helps users find places, plan trips, and understand routes with more context.
With the new Ask Maps interface, users can ask complex questions directly in Google Maps, rather than relying on basic keyword searches.
For example, users can ask prompts such as:
Gemini processes large amounts of Maps data, including reviews, photos, and business information, to deliver contextual recommendations. This approach helps surface locations that match the user’s needs more accurately than standard search queries.
The update also improves recommendations by analyzing a user’s past activity and preferences within Google Maps.
The AI can suggest restaurants, attractions, or places to visit based on a user’s interests and previous searches. It can also generate trip ideas by combining multiple stops, such as cafes, parks, and sightseeing spots, along a route. This turns Google Maps into a planning assistant that helps users discover places rather than simply navigate.
Alongside Ask Maps, Google is introducing a new Immersive Navigation experience in Google Maps. The upgraded navigation interface provides a more detailed visual representation of routes, including:
The goal is to make navigation easier to understand before reaching a location.
The Gemini-powered features are rolling out to Google Maps on iOS and Android, with initial availability in select regions including the United States and India.
Google plans to expand the rollout to more users and platforms over time as the AI-powered experience continues to evolve.
