WhatsApp is testing a new way to surface Status updates by bringing them into the Chats tab. The feature could make Status more visible without changing how it works.
WhatsApp appears to be working on a change that could make Status updates much more visible across the app. A recent TestFlight build includes references to bringing Status directly into the Chats tab, marking a notable shift from its current placement.
The feature was first spotted by WABetaInfo and isn’t live for testing just yet. Similar traces have also surfaced in recent Android beta builds, suggesting this change is being explored across both platforms.
Instead of living in a separate tab, Status updates could show up as a Stories-style carousel within the Chats tab. Early details suggest the tray would only appear when users pull down from the top of their chat list, keeping the interface clean while still making Status easier to access.
The layout is expected to feel familiar. Users would see a quick option to post their own Status first, followed by updates from contacts. These updates may be ranked based on interaction frequency, meaning the people you engage with most would appear at the front. Updates from muted contacts would still be available, likely toward the end of the list.
Importantly, the core behavior of Status updates is not expected to change. They would still disappear after 24 hours and support features like stickers, music, and other creative tools. The focus here is on visibility, not functionality.
This move signals that WhatsApp may be looking to give Status a more central role within the app, making it something users encounter naturally while checking messages rather than visiting a separate tab.
There’s no official word on when this feature might roll out. However, its presence in both iOS and Android beta builds suggests a wider release could be on the horizon.
