Instagram is rolling out new controls that let users view and edit the interests that shape feed recommendations, giving them more direct control over what content appears in the app.
Instagram is expanding its “Your Algorithm” controls to the main feed, giving users a clearer understanding of the topics that influence recommendations and a new way to adjust them directly.
The update allows users to see why certain posts appear in their feed and fine-tune their interests without relying solely on likes, views, or watch history.
According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the new feature allows users to view the interests that shape their recommendations and modify them directly within the app.
Until now, Instagram’s recommendations were driven almost entirely by activity signals such as likes, views, shares, and interactions. The new controls introduce a more direct way for users to influence the content that appears in their feed.
Mosseri also revealed that Instagram plans to expand the feature further, introducing controls tied to specific creators, content formats, moods, and other viewing preferences in the future.
The goal is to give users more transparency and control over the recommendation system rather than relying exclusively on algorithmic signals.
Instagram has gradually rolled out recommendation controls across different parts of the platform. Similar tools first appeared in Reels and Explore before making their way to the main feed.
Mosseri noted that recommendation systems have become increasingly sophisticated over the years, but many users still feel they have limited control over what appears on their screens.
Most recommendations continue to be based on signals such as watch time, likes, comments, and interactions, meaning users have traditionally had few ways to directly tell Instagram what they want to see more or less of.
According to Mosseri, many people do not fully understand why certain posts appear in their feeds, which can make the experience feel unpredictable even when the recommendation system is functioning as intended.
The new controls are designed to make Instagram’s recommendation system more transparent. Instead of guessing why specific content keeps showing up, users can review the interests associated with their account and adjust them whenever they choose.
As social platforms face growing pressure to provide greater transparency around recommendation algorithms, Instagram’s latest update gives users more visibility into how content is selected and more control over the experience.
