Craig Federighi says iPhone Duo could overlap with the iPad mini

Craig Federighi says iPhone Duo could fill some iPad mini use cases. The $1,999 foldable still has a different price, screen, and phone-first role in Apple's lineup.

Apple’s Craig Federighi has acknowledged that iPhone Duo could overlap with some iPad use cases, with the iPad mini being the clearest example. In an interview with Marques Brownlee, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering compared the choice to how people divide their time between an iPad and a Mac.

Federighi said users eventually settle into "very natural patterns" for each device. He then got specific about the iPad mini, saying that "for someone who maybe had an iPad mini or something, this device can often fill that space for them." That is an acknowledgment of overlapping use, not a statement that Apple plans to retire the iPad mini.

The Duo comes close to the iPad mini’s role

Apple’s iPhone Duo announcement says the phone opens to a 7.6-inch inner display, runs an iOS experience adapted to the foldable form factor, and will support Apple Pencil (USB-C) later this year. Apple’s iPad mini specifications list an 8.3-inch display and Apple Pencil support for the current model.

The mini still has more screen, but Duo adds a 5.4-inch outer display and the full phone experience. The 2026 iPad guide describes the iPad mini as Apple’s portability-focused tablet. Duo now invites the same question in a different way: would some people rather fold that larger-screen experience into their phone than carry a second device?

That size comparison is an inference from Apple’s specifications, not something Federighi said directly.

Apple says Duo was designed as its own thing

Federighi also said Apple built the Duo’s software around the new form factor instead of stretching or cramming another device experience into it. Apple’s release says iOS 27 includes split-screen multitasking and apps optimized for the Duo’s two displays. A full iPhone Duo breakdown covers the confirmed hardware and software details.

Apple has not said the iPad mini is going away, and Federighi did not claim that Duo replaces it. The two products also land in very different price brackets: Duo starts at $1,999 in the U.S. and goes on sale October 23, while the iPad mini remains a much cheaper tablet.
