iPhone Air 2 leak reveals dual 48MP cameras and a bigger battery

The iPhone Air 2 could fix the original Air’s biggest compromises with an ultra-wide camera and bigger battery, while getting even thinner at a rumored 5.2mm.

Apple’s next ultra-thin iPhone could be getting some much-needed upgrades. The iPhone Air 2 has resurfaced in a new leak that suggests Apple is addressing some of the biggest compromises of its first-generation iPhone Air.

According to a Weibo post from well-known Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, the iPhone Air 2 will retain its slim design and 120Hz OLED display while adding an A20-series chip, two 48MP rear cameras, and a larger battery of around 3,500mAh.

iPhone Air 2 display: Same size, same smooth 120Hz

According to the leak, the iPhone Air 2 will sport a 6.55-inch flat OLED display with a 1.5K+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. This would keep essentially the same screen size as its predecessor, which already offers a 6.5-inch ProMotion display that runs at up to 120Hz, so don’t expect a big change on the display front.

Under the hood, Apple could equip the device with an A20-series chipset built on a 2nm process, delivering an iPhone 18 Pro-like performance upgrade. The iPhone 18 Pro, which launched in September, already runs on Apple’s 2nm A20 Pro chip.

Dual 48MP rear cameras could fix the biggest Air limitation

The camera department could receive one of the most noticeable upgrades. The iPhone Air 2 is tipped to feature a 48MP primary sensor and a 48MP ultra-wide camera. For comparison, the original iPhone Air features only a single 48MP rear camera.

Adding an ultra-wide sensor would give users more flexibility when capturing landscapes, group photos, and wider scenes. It would also bring the camera experience closer to Apple’s standard iPhone models.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Apple’s plans to improve the camera hardware. A previous report by The Information said the iPhone Air 2 could borrow cooling and camera features from the iPhone 17 Pro.

Bigger battery yet thinner design

The iPhone Air 2 is rumored to feature a battery capacity of around 3,500mAh or higher, up from the 3,149mAh battery in the original model. The difference is small, but combined with the new, efficient 2nm processor, it could increase overall battery life.

It’s surprising that Apple may make all these upgrades without increasing the phone’s thickness. Previous leaks suggest the iPhone Air 2 could measure just 5.2mm thick, making it even slimmer than its 5.64mm predecessor.

The device is also expected to feature Apple’s next-generation N2 wireless networking chip and C2 modem, potentially improving connectivity and power efficiency.

iPhone Air 2 launch timeline

Apple is reportedly planning to launch the iPhone Air 2 in spring 2027 alongside the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e. This follows earlier reports suggesting that Apple had reconsidered its launch plans for the second-generation Air.

Of course, all the specs mentioned are still based on leaks. However, if the reports prove accurate, the iPhone Air 2 could address the two biggest weaknesses of its predecessor: the single rear camera and modest battery.
