macOS Will Flag the Slower USB-C Port on MacBook Neo

Apple has equipped the new MacBook Neo with two USB-C ports, but they are not identical in terms of functionality and performance. While the laptop may appear to have symmetrical connectivity, the capabilities of each port differ significantly.

The USB-C port on the left side supports USB 3 speeds up to 10 Gbps. This faster port is designed for high-bandwidth tasks, such as connecting external SSDs, docks, and displays.

Meanwhile, the USB-C port located closer to the trackpad, is limited to USB 2 speeds of just 480 Mbps. This makes it suitable for charging and basic accessories, but it cannot handle more demanding connections.

External Display Works Only Through One Port

Due to this hardware limitation, Apple confirms that external display connectivity is supported only through the left USB-C port. Attempting to connect a monitor through the slower right side port will not work for display output.

Apple says the MacBook Neo supports one external display with up to 4K resolution at 60 Hz, allowing users to extend their workspace to a larger screen.

macOS Warns If You Use the Wrong Port

Since the ports are not labeled on the MacBook Neo, users could easily plug an external display into the wrong port.

However, according to Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, macOS helps reduce this confusion. If you connect a display to the slower USB 2 port, the system shows a notification informing you that the display must be connected to the other port.

Pricing and Availability

The MacBook Neo is currently available to pre-order in the United States, starting at $599. Apple also offers a $499 price for college students, making it the most affordable MacBook in the company’s lineup.

The laptop is scheduled to officially launch on March 11.
