WhatsApp has started rolling out username reservations ahead of username-based messaging, allowing users to secure a unique username before the feature launches globally.
WhatsApp has begun rolling out username reservations ahead of the launch of username-based messaging. The rollout starts this week, though the reservation system wonβt be available to everyone immediately.
Once username-based messaging rolls out, users who have reserved a username will no longer need to share their phone number when messaging someone or contacting a business for the first time.
WhatsApp saysΒ users who are eligibleΒ will receive a notification when username reservations become available for their account.
Once access is enabled, a username can be reserved by heading to Settings β Account β Username.
Usernames must be between three and 35 characters long. Since WhatsApp has more than three billion users worldwide, the company is opening reservations early to give everyone a better chance of claiming the username they want.
WhatsApp also recommends choosing a unique username thatβs easy for your contacts to recognize.
Creators, businesses, and organizations can also reserve the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook. If that username hasnβt already been claimed on WhatsApp, users will see an option to use their existing Instagram or Facebook username during the reservation process.
WhatsApp says there wonβt be a public directory of usernames or suggestions to help users discover accounts. Instead, someone will need to know your exact username before they can message you. The company is also introducing an optional username key, which adds another layer of protection against spam.
Username reservations are rolling out now, while username-based messaging will become available gradually over the next few months. Once the feature is fully live, users who have set a username will no longer need to reveal their phone number when messaging someone or contacting a business for the first time.
Will you reserve a WhatsApp username as soon as reservations open for your account? Let us know in the comments below.
