Apple is reportedly developing AirPods with built-in cameras designed to power Siri and Visual Intelligence. Here’s everything we know about the rumored AI-focused wearable so far.
Apple is reportedly developing a new version of AirPods with built-in cameras, a product that could become the company’s first truly AI-focused wearable. Rather than being used for photography or video recording, the cameras are expected to help Siri and Visual Intelligence better understand a user’s surroundings.
Current rumors suggest the new AirPods could launch in late 2027. Here’s everything we know so far.
The new AirPods are expected to closely resemble the current AirPods Pro lineup, with the most significant change being cameras integrated into the stems.
Apple is also reportedly testing a visual indicator light that activates whenever visual data is sent to the cloud, helping people nearby know when the cameras are in use.
Aside from the updated stems, the earbuds and charging case are expected to maintain a similar design, fit, and overall form factor. Reports suggest Apple may use miniature infrared sensors similar to the technology behind Face ID.
The built-in cameras would provide Siri with visual information about a user’s environment.
With access to visual data, Siri could answer questions about nearby objects, provide contextual information, and assist users based on what they are looking at. Rumored use cases include turn-by-turn walking directions, contextual reminders, object recognition, and enhanced spatial awareness.
The AirPods are also expected to work closely with Visual Intelligence. While Visual Intelligence currently relies on the iPhone’s camera, future AirPods could supply visual information directly to the feature.
Importantly, users are not expected to be able to take photos or record videos using the cameras. Their primary purpose would be environmental awareness and AI-powered assistance.
The camera-equipped AirPods could debut Apple’s next-generation H3 chip.
Rumors suggest the new chip will deliver lower latency, improved audio quality, better power efficiency, and enhanced processing capabilities needed for AI-powered visual experiences.
The H3 chip may also help handle some AI tasks directly on the device, reducing reliance on cloud processing.
Apple’s naming strategy remains unclear.
Early reports suggested the camera-equipped AirPods would not be marketed as an entirely new product category and might not be called AirPods Pro 4.
More recent rumors indicate the device could become part of the AirPods Pro family. Possible names include AirPods Pro 4, although AirPods Ultra has also been mentioned as a potential branding option.
For now, the final name remains unknown.
Adding cameras and advanced AI capabilities could increase the price beyond the current $249 starting price of AirPods Pro.
Apple has not provided any pricing information, but analysts expect the new model to sit at the premium end of the AirPods lineup.
Many of the rumored AI features will likely require a device that supports Apple Intelligence.
Currently, Apple Intelligence is available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and newer compatible devices. Future Apple Intelligence requirements could play a major role in determining which devices can fully take advantage of the camera-equipped AirPods.
While some early reports suggested a much earlier launch, the latest rumors point to a release in late 2027.
Current reports indicate the AirPods could debut alongside Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone and a second-generation foldable iPhone.
According to reports, Apple has needed additional time to develop visual AI models capable of recognizing objects and understanding the environment around users. The company is also said to be testing the new AirPods alongside iOS 28, which remains in development.
Although the product is still years away, camera-equipped AirPods could represent one of Apple’s most ambitious efforts yet to blend artificial intelligence, wearable technology, and environmental awareness into a single device.
