The latest Fortnite update adds new gameplay changes, three sprites, loot pool updates, and the launch of Season X in Fortnite OG.
A notable Fortnite update, v42.10, is on schedule to launch on Thursday, September 3. Unlike last week’s update, this one packs three different sprites among other changes coming for the Battle Royale mode and also marks the start of Season X in Fortnite OG.
Over the past several days, Fortnite’s official social handles have been building hype for the forthcoming content drop. In doing so, they have put the spotlight on some of the most prominent features and new additions in this update, ranging from fan-made items to changes in the loot pool. In this article, you can find all such revealed changes coming to both Fortnite Battle Royale and Fortnite OG.
The next lineup of incoming sprites is dominated by two fan-made ones, namely Avila215’s X-Ray Sprite and Enorull’s Onigiri Sprite. Originally, the latter fan’s Bullet Sprite was going to feature in the update, but it was swapped with another one of his sprite entries for undisclosed reasons.
Match Overrides have significantly shaped the gameplay in the Battle Royale mode during the Fortnite Override season. These appear as giant cartridges on the map and allow the first player to interact with any one of them to choose from a range of different boost options, such as Sonic Speed, which steadily increases sprint speed and Speed Shooter, which increases the rate of fire and reload speed. Whichever boost is picked gets applied for all players in that particular match.
The following are the two new Match Overrides announced for Thursday’s update. Besides them, three more are confirmed to join, but there’s no information about what they are called.
*Although Fortnite’s announcement image showed Striker Burst as the third weapon to be added in the loot pool, it was later corrected and revealed to be Wrecker Revolver instead.
Apart from the Battle Royale mode, a flurry of changes are also planned to hit OG Mode as it transitions from Fortnite OG Season 9 to Season X. From new OG Pass skins to new points of interest on the map, there is a good variety of stuff in the update coming out this week.
A new victory umbrella inspired by the X glider is coming in Fortnite OG Season X. This item will be available to those who bag a Victory Royale in any standard match during the forthcoming season.
Other than the items mentioned above, a few others have also been revealed to be dropping later during Season X. This glimpse gives us an exciting look at the near future of Fortnite OG mode.
All the aforementioned changes and new additions will roll out on September 3, after a certain period of server downtime, which is expected to start at 1 AM PT or 4 AM ET and is expected to last about 3 hours. It’s worth noting that matchmaking should be inactive about 30 minutes before this downtime. You can expect to jump back into Fortnite and enjoy the new update at a fixed time as laid out below.

Given the volume of content packed in the Fortnite v42.10 update, it seems fair to say that once the update drops, players will have a lot of places to explore and a lot of items to collect. This should help the game raise its engagement levels, an area which has dwindled over the years, as reports have shown.
On the surface, Epic Games seems to understand well the task of doing everything in their control to boost Fortnite’s daily player count. Whether or not the developer will be able to execute the task well before any serious call, such as the major layoffs earlier in 2026, needs to be made is another discussion. However, if ingenious features—such as the introduction of sprites in gameplay—continue to come out at a good rate, the Tim Sweeney-led company should be able to steer the ship back on track.
