Apple's HomePod mini 2 launched at $149 with an S10 chip, Sound Glow, and Thread support. Siri AI comes later, so here's what to know before buying.
Apple announced the HomePod mini 2 on October 13, 2026. Pre-orders opened the same day, and the speaker goes on sale in stores on October 30. It costs $149, which is $50 more than the original mini cost when it launched in 2020.
You get a new S10 chip, Thread support, and a light display on top right away. The feature Apple leads with, Siri AI, comes later as a free software update. So the real question is whether the speaker is worth $149 without it.
Apple’s spec page lists these. Thread matters most if you’re building a smart home, and Wi-Fi 6E only helps if your router supports the 6 GHz band.

The original mini shipped with an S5 chip. The S10 is the biggest hardware change, and Apple pairs it with computational audio that analyzes music in real time to adjust dynamic range, loudness, and acoustic performance.

Other changes:
Apple gives the speaker a full-range driver, dual passive radiators, and 360-degree sound. It doesn’t publish driver size or power output, so you can’t compare the audio on paper. If sound quality is the main reason to buy, check reviews first.
Sound Glow is the light show on top. It pulses in sync with the music, takes its colors from album art, and can run soundscape animations like rain. It’s fun, but it doesn’t change how the speaker sounds.

The original mini was $129 after Apple’s June 2026 price increase, so the new one costs $20 more than that. The full-size HomePod costs $349, so the mini is still the cheaper way into Apple’s speaker lineup.

If you only want a speaker for music and timers, $20 for a faster chip and a light show is hard to justify on specs alone. The math gets better if you want the four-speaker Apple TV setup, which needs a mini 2 or a 2nd-generation HomePod.
Siri AI debuted with iOS 27. Apple says it comes to the HomePod mini 2 as a free software update in the future, and it hasn’t given a date.

According to Apple, it adds:
The limits matter more than the feature list:
Apple hasn’t said whether the original mini gets Siri AI, so don’t assume it will. Apple says Siri requests can use on-device processing or Private Cloud Compute, and that data processed in Private Cloud Compute isn’t stored or made accessible to Apple or anyone else.
The mini 2 works as a home hub for HomeKit and Matter accessories. Once it’s set up with your iPhone or iPad, you can control them from the Home app when you’re away. The accessories themselves are sold separately.

Two things need a caveat:

The new Apple TV 4K (4th generation) is the first Apple TV 4K to support four-speaker surround sound. You need four speakers in matching front and rear pairs, using HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation). Apple’s setup photo pairs two mini 2s with two full-size HomePods around the TV. The speakers detect where they sit in the room and set timing and levels on their own.

The Apple TV 4K costs $299 and ships November 13, so the setup can’t start before then. If you own one mini, you’d need three more speakers to use it this way.
Two mini 2s make a stereo pair, but both must be the same model and generation. It also works as a speaker for a Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later, and it can join multiroom AirPlay with other HomePods or AirPlay speakers.

HomePod mini 2 is a real upgrade, even before Siri AI arrives. The S10 chip, Thread support, and Wi-Fi 6E make it a better smart home hub than the original. It’s also the cheapest way into Apple’s new four-speaker surround setup with Apple TV 4K. Sound Glow adds some personality, but it doesn’t change how the speaker sounds.
The problem is timing. Apple’s marketing leads with Siri AI, and that feature has no release date. Apple also hasn’t said whether the original mini will get it. That leaves you paying $149 today for hardware upgrades plus a promise.
If you’re building out a Matter or Thread smart home, or you’re planning the Apple TV surround setup after November 13, buy it now. If you mainly want a smarter Siri, your current mini will keep working fine until Apple gives a date. Wait for reviews and the software update before you spend.
