WhatsApp Adds Expiring “About” Status, Similar to Instagram Notes
WhatsApp revives its classic About status with a new disappearing text format for quick, lightweight updates.
WhatsApp is reviving its original “About” feature with a fresh twist, introducing a disappearing text status that functions much like Instagram Notes. The update, which is rolling out to mobile users this week, brings back short-form status updates with better visibility and user control.
Users Can Share What They’re Up To with Short Text Updates
The new feature allows WhatsApp users to post a short line of text, a quick status update that can be seen by others at the top of one-on-one chats or when visiting someone’s profile. Whether you’re sharing what you’re doing, letting others know you’re unavailable, or just sparking a conversation, this small text block adds a lightweight social layer to messaging.

The status will disappear by default after 24 hours, similar to how Instagram Notes behave. However, users can customize the duration, setting it to disappear sooner or last longer than a day. There are also privacy controls to limit visibility. You can choose whether it’s visible to all contacts, specific groups, or no one at all.
WhatsApp Brings Back Its Original Status Feature
Interestingly, this feature isn’t entirely new. This “About” section was actually one of WhatsApp’s earliest features before it focused on private, encrypted messaging. Back then, users shared small text updates to inform others what they were up to—a function now reimagined with more prominent placement and control.
Now, the About status appears at the top of chat threads and user profiles, rather than being hidden in settings. This makes it easier for friends and contacts to notice and respond to it, helping conversations start more naturally.
No Videos or Music Yet, But That Could Change
At launch, the About status is text-only. It doesn’t support short looping videos or music sharing like Instagram Notes. However, these features could be added in the future if the new status format becomes popular with users.
Rolling Out on Mobile Devices Starting This Week
The updated About status feature is now being rolled out to WhatsApp users on both Android and iOS. It may take a few days before it becomes available to everyone, depending on the app version and region.
