Fortnite’s latest Thursday update, pushed out on July 23, has introduced the cube sprite variant to players. This addition came several days after leaks revealed a cube variant was set to be rolled out soon.

With the arrival of the cube type, there are now five different sprite variants in Fortnite. It’s important to keep in mind that not all sprites come in all these variants, as certain ones, such as the Vini Jr Sprite, are restricted to a single variant (base). As for the cube type, only the Earth, Fire, Dream, Punk, Fishy, Boss, Grim, and Batman sprites are reported to come in this particular variant, as per Fortnite.gg.

Read on to learn more about the cube sprite and how it influences gameplay in Fortnite. In this article, you can also find a list of locations where this highly sought-after variant has previously spawned for players.

Cube sprite variant usage

If you equip the cube variant of a sprite, you will receive the Overdrive effect while you are in the Storm. Importantly, this perk works in addition to the primary boost provided by the sprite.

For those who don’t know, in Battle Royale, the Storm is the element that continuously depletes your health when you are outside the safe zone, depicted as a shrinking circle on the map. On the other hand, the Overdrive effect is a temporary boost that increases your stamina, your sprint speed, and the elevation you gain during a jump.

Cube sprite possible map locations

Being a recently introduced variant, the cube variant is among the rarest to find in Fortnite. So, you can expect it to have better chances to spawn when opening Sprite Chests in secret vaults and Mystery Doors. However, certain players are known to have found cube sprites from the following locations as well so far.

1. Calamari Canyon

In Calamari Canyon, there are at least two places (marked on the image above) where you can find a chest that has a fair chance of giving you a cube variant. First off, go to the top-most floor of the lighthouse, which is located on the west end. There, you will find a chest on the outer walkway that can give you a cube sprite.

Before heading to the next spot, search Calamari Canyon for a vault key. In case it has already been picked up by someone else, you will have to either eliminate him and grab the key for yourself or try this again in the next match.

When you find the key, head out to the house, which is isolated from the others, and lies on the east side of Calamari Canyon. Once you enter it, you will notice a section of the floor covered in wooden planks, near the lamp, which you will have to break to enter the basement. Once there, go to the floor beneath it and unlock the vault using the key. There are three different sprite chests there, one of which can spawn a cube variant.

2. The Battlewoods

For trying your luck here, you must first obtain 500 Gold during the match. As soon as that criterion is met, head towards the east of the Battlewoods, beyond the lake, there is a building sandwiched between two road intersections. Enter it and go to the lowest floor, where you will find a Mystery Door. It has a Sprite Chest and a normal chest, with a reasonable probability of granting a cube sprite.

3. Batman villain locations

While any Batman Sprite variant can be obtained from the chests, there is another method that is highly likely to reward you with this particular sprite. That method involves defeating Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn, who are located in specific parts of the map.

Batman villain locations

Since the introduction of cube sprites, these DC villains are strongly rumored to be dropping the Cube Batman Sprite occasionally. So, it’s worth giving this approach a shot if you want to get a cube variant. Check out this article about the Batman Sprite to get precise details on where to find the aforementioned foes.

More ways to get the Cube sprite variant

Take it from an opponent

Instead of spending hours hunting sprites, you can also get your desired sprites from the opponents you face in a given match. When you are in the lobby, take some time to check the sprites players have equipped on their back. If you do find one that you want, try to remember the outfit of the player who has it.

Once the match kicks off and you are on the Battle Bus, pay attention to when that player jumps off and follow right after him. As soon as you hit the ground, quickly gather some guns and ammo and eliminate that opponent to take the sprite from him.

Index it from another player

There is a friendlier version of adding a sprite to your collection by getting it from another player. This method is called indexing, which involves borrowing a sprite, extracting it (to add it to your collection), and then later returning it to its original owner. You can find players willing to help out others complete their collection in the “sprite-runners-network” channel of Fortnite’s official Discord server.

Wrapping up

With only a few weeks before the ongoing Fortnite Runners season comes to a close, a final few sprites and sprite variants are in the pipeline for their routine drops on Thursdays. It will be interesting to see what the devs bring next to fill in the void left by the sprite gameplay mechanic. More should become clear as we approach the season’s end scheduled for August 19, 2026.
