Apple may launch two AirPods 5 models at its September event

Apple may introduce two AirPods 5 models as early as its September iPhone event. The report points to regular and active noise cancellation versions.

Apple’s next entry-level AirPods may arrive as soon as next month. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is preparing two AirPods 5 models for its expected September product event, likely on September 9. One version would be a standard model, while the other would add active noise cancellation.

That would give Apple a direct refresh to the AirPods 4 lineup. The current earbuds launched in September 2024, and U.S. pricing runs from $129 to $179. If Apple keeps the same split, buyers may get a cheaper open-fit option and an ANC version without moving up to AirPods Pro.

Two AirPods 5 versions are reportedly planned

Gurman’s report does not include design, battery, chip, or pricing details. For now, the clearest expectation is a regular AirPods 5 and a second version with active noise cancellation, following the way Apple separated the AirPods 4 models.

There is one software clue behind the rumor. AirPods 5 references in macOS 26.7 code appeared last week, although the code does not explain how the new earbuds will differ from the current generation.

Camera-equipped AirPods are a separate project

The AirPods 5 should not be confused with Apple’s more ambitious camera-equipped earbuds. Gurman now expects those to arrive in 2027. An Apple demo video showing camera AirPods using Visual Intelligence offers a look at that project, but it does not change the simpler AirPods 5 report.

The split matters because the next AirPods launch may be a familiar audio update rather than Apple’s first move into camera-based wearables. Apple appears to be keeping those products on separate timelines.

What the report means for AirPods buyers

The current AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 comparison still explains Apple’s basic choice between an open fit and a sealed Pro design. If you are considering AirPods 4 mainly for the ANC model, waiting for Apple’s September event could make sense. Apple has not confirmed the AirPods 5 name, specifications, price, or release date, so there is no guarantee the reported update will arrive on schedule.
