Apple has reportedly reached a major stage in the development of its long-rumored AirPods with built-in cameras.

According to Bloomberg, the project has now entered the Design Validation Testing stage, where prototypes are said to feature near-final hardware and capabilities. The report suggests Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods have moved well beyond early experimentation and are now in advanced internal testing.

Apple is using the cameras for visual AI features

The cameras won’t be used for taking photos or recording video. Instead, they’re expected to serve as visual input for Siri and other AI features.

The idea is that the earbuds can understand the environment around the user in a similar way to how visual AI tools currently analyze uploaded images. For example, users could look at ingredients in a kitchen and ask what meal they could make, or receive contextual reminders based on objects nearby.

Apple is also exploring navigation features tied to the cameras. Rather than only giving standard turn-by-turn directions, Siri could reference nearby landmarks while guiding the user.

Both earbuds are expected to include cameras, and the design may feature slightly longer stems than current AirPods Pro models to make room for the added hardware.

Visual privacy indicators and cloud processing

Apple is also adding a small LED indicator that lights up whenever visual data is being processed or sent to the cloud.

The system appears to rely heavily on AI processing connected to Apple’s next-generation Siri platform, which may explain why the product’s timeline shifted. Bloomberg says Apple originally targeted an earlier launch window, though delays tied to Siri pushed the schedule back.

The AirPods are currently in the DVT phase, which is one of the final testing stages before production after that comes Production Validation Testing, where Apple begins preparing for early manufacturing.

The report also claims Apple expects strong demand for the product and is already working on securing components for larger-scale production.
