A new report claims Apple is preparing to unveil its first smart glasses at WWDC 2027, with privacy-focused hardware and software features expected to be a major selling point.

Apple is reportedly making privacy one of the biggest selling points of its first pair of smart glasses, a strategy that could help the company stand out in a market currently led by products such as the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing new privacy-focused hardware and software features for the wearable and is currently targeting a WWDC 2027 unveiling.

Although Gurman did not reveal the specific privacy features Apple is working on, he said the company plans to make privacy a central part of its marketing strategy. That approach could help Apple differentiate its smart glasses from competing products, many of which have faced criticism over their ability to capture photos and videos without people realizing they are being recorded.

Apple has reportedly tested multiple camera designs

Privacy concerns have reportedly shaped more than just Apple’s software plans.

According to Gurman, Apple has experimented with several hardware designs while developing its smart glasses.

One prototype reportedly featured cameras that supported AI-powered visual features but did not allow users to take photos or record videos. Apple has also tested another version that completely removed the camera system.

Both concepts appear to be aimed at addressing the privacy concerns that have surrounded camera-equipped smart glasses for years.

Despite those experiments, Gurman says Apple’s current plan is still to ship the glasses with built-in cameras. Rather than removing cameras altogether, the company is reportedly exploring hardware and software solutions that make them less intrusive and give users and bystanders greater confidence about when and how the cameras are being used.

A WWDC 2027 launch is currently planned

Beyond their privacy-focused design, Apple’s smart glasses are expected to include speakers and microphones for listening to music, making phone calls, receiving notifications, and interacting with Siri.

In terms of functionality, the device is expected to compete directly with products such as the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses while placing a stronger emphasis on user privacy.

According to Gurman, Apple is currently targeting a WWDC 2027 announcement, with customer shipments expected to begin later that year.

As with any product still under development, Apple’s plans could change before launch, and both the timeline and final feature set remain subject to change.

If the report proves accurate, Apple’s first smart glasses could represent one of the company’s biggest new product launches since the Vision Pro, with privacy positioned as a key differentiator in an increasingly competitive wearable market.
