Instagram will limit reach for unlabeled AI-generated profiles

Instagram renames its AI creator label to AI-generated profile and may limit recommendations for unlabeled AI personas. Human creators using AI tools are not targeted.

Instagram is changing how it treats accounts built around AI-generated people. In an announcement on Instagram’s Creators blog, the platform said it is renaming the account-level “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile” and will limit the reach of profiles that feature an AI-generated person but do not use the label.

This is a recommendation penalty, not a ban on virtual influencers. Instagram says creators who add the label proactively will not see a change to their profile’s reach. It has not shared a percentage or explained exactly how much exposure an affected account could lose.

The label targets synthetic identities

The label is about who the profile represents, not every tool used to make a post. Instagram says creators who use AI for photo edits, captions, graphics, or other parts of a creative process do not need the profile-level label. A real creator using Instagram’s Restyle AI editing tool to change a photo is a different case from a profile built around an AI-generated person.

Instagram already uses post-level “AI info” labels. Meta’s policy says those labels can cover AI-generated or AI-altered images, videos, and audio. Content that was only modified by an AI tool may show the label in a post’s menu. Instagram says the new profile label can appear alongside an account’s content when a particular post does not already carry an AI label.

Meta’s separate Muse Image feature also raised questions about using public Instagram content to make AI-generated images. That is a different issue from the identity rule, and the relevant privacy setting can be turned off.

What happens if an account skips the label

Instagram says its systems will notify detected unlabeled profiles. Owners can check Account Status to see whether the profile has become ineligible for recommendations. In practical terms, that means fewer chances to reach people outside the account’s existing audience through Instagram’s discovery surfaces.

Instagram has been giving users more control over the topics that shape feed recommendations, but it has not said how large the reduction will be or whether every detected profile will be treated the same way.

To restore recommendation eligibility, a creator can edit the profile and turn on “AI-generated profile”. If the creator believes Instagram made a mistake, they can appeal through Account Status. Instagram says a successful appeal makes the profile and its content eligible for recommendations again.

A new enforcement step for an existing label

Instagram began testing the account-level “AI creator” label earlier this year. At that stage, it was optional and did not affect distribution. The current announcement changes the wording and adds a reach consequence for profiles Instagram detects as AI-generated but not properly labeled.

For operators of fully synthetic influencer accounts, the practical choice is to disclose the AI identity or risk losing recommendation reach. Human creators who use AI for editing and other production tasks are outside the rule as Instagram has described it.
