iOS 28 rumors surface before Apple even unveils iOS 27

Apple may already be planning bigger software changes for iOS 28, even before unveiling iOS 27, with reports suggesting the 2027 update could be a far more ambitious release.

Apple may already be looking beyond iOS 27. According to Mark Gurman, the company expects iOS 28 to be a much bigger release than next year’s update.

First iOS 28 rumor is already here

In his Power On newsletter, Gurman says Apple’s 2027 software releases are expected to be more ambitious than the updates arriving in 2026.

Internally, Apple is reportedly using the codename “Bell” for iOS 28 and ‘Poppy” for macOS 28.

The timing of the report is notable because Apple hasn’t even unveiled iOS 27 yet. Hearing that the following year’s update could be more significant suggests the company may already be planning larger software changes beyond its current Apple Intelligence roadmap.

The timing is also interesting because iOS 28 is expected to debut alongside Apple’s redesigned 20th-anniversary iPhone. Major iPhone redesigns have often been accompanied by software experiences built around new hardware capabilities, which may explain why Apple is reportedly placing greater importance on the update internally.

iOS 27 will focus heavily on Siri and Apple Intelligence

While iOS 28 remains a mystery, iOS 27 is expected to focus largely on upgrades to Siri and Apple Intelligence.

Apple is reportedly working on a more personalized Siri experience with on-screen awareness and better context understanding across apps like Mail and Messages.

The update is also expected to introduce:

  • A dedicated Siri app for back-and-forth conversations
  • Improved natural language understanding
  • A new “Search or Ask” experience in the Dynamic Island

Many of the features expected in iOS 27 were originally previewed earlier but were delayed before launch. As a result, iOS 27 is expected to focus more on delivering previously announced Apple Intelligence features rather than introducing an entirely new direction for the platform.

These additions are expected to make Siri feel more conversational and more aware of what users are doing across apps.

Apple will officially unveil iOS 27 during WWDC 2026 on June 8, while iOS 28 will likely be introduced at WWDC 2027. Until then, Apple’s plans for iOS 28 remain largely unknown beyond Gurman’s suggestion that it could be a far more ambitious release.
