Apple is reportedly negotiating lower OLED panel prices with Samsung Display and LG Display for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max as it looks to offset rising memory and storage costs.

According to The Elec, Apple is aiming to pay around $70 per OLED panel, although industry sources expect the final negotiated price to settle at approximately $66.50 per panel. If the negotiations are successful, Apple could secure one of its largest OLED panel cost reductions in recent years.

Apple has historically negotiated lower display prices with each new iPhone generation, but this year’s talks appear more aggressive. The company is reportedly seeking a deeper price cut even as Samsung Display and LG Display prepare to manufacture the new M16 OLED panels for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

Apple wants lower prices for a more advanced display

The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to feature Samsung Display’s new M16 OLED material set, which is designed to deliver improved brightness efficiency, better color accuracy, and a longer display lifespan.

However, the upgraded display technology is also more difficult and expensive to manufacture. Suppliers will need to improve production yields before they can scale up mass production efficiently.

Earlier reports have also suggested that the iPhone 18 Pro lineup will adopt LTPO+ display technology, adding another significant upgrade to Apple’s flagship displays.

According to the report, Samsung Display is expected to supply around 46 million OLED panels for the iPhone 18 family, while LG Display could manufacture an additional 41 million panels.

Most of those displays are expected to be used in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, although both suppliers are also reportedly preparing OLED panels for Apple’s first foldable iPhone.

Higher iPhone prices are still possible

Even if Apple succeeds in lowering OLED panel costs, the savings may not be enough to offset the continued rise in memory and storage prices.

Memory and NAND flash costs have continued increasing across the semiconductor industry, adding further pressure to the manufacturing costs of premium smartphones.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro lineup this September. While lower OLED panel prices could help reduce production costs, rising component prices elsewhere in the supply chain may still result in higher retail prices for consumers.

Whether Apple absorbs those additional costs or passes them on to buyers remains to be seen.
