New Mac mini could launch before Apple’s September event, report says

Apple may update the Mac mini within days, before its main iPhone event. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is preparing a new model after nearly two years, potentially ahead of the September 9 event the company is expected to hold.

Apple has not announced the Mac mini or confirmed an event date. The timing is notable because Tim Cook is scheduled to become Apple’s executive chairman on September 1, with John Ternus taking over as CEO. If Gurman’s timing is right, the Mac mini could be the last new product introduced before that transition.

M5 and M6 Mac mini versions are both in testing

Gurman says Apple has tested Mac mini versions with both M5 and M6 generations of Apple silicon. That does not mean Apple plans to ship two chips, or that the final model will use the newer generation. The report leaves the decision open.

The current Mac mini lineup uses M4 and M4 Pro chips and launched in 2024. A new model would arrive as Apple is trying to keep up with demand from people using compact Macs to run AI models locally.

Supply trouble is part of the story

Mac mini delivery times have stretched for weeks or months on some configurations. Earlier this year, Mac mini and Mac Studio shortages were expected to last for several months as demand moved faster than supply.

Apple is also preparing to make Mac mini units in Houston later this year. Apple’s Houston manufacturing plan says the new facility will produce the computer in the United States for the first time. It remains unclear whether the model that may launch in the coming days is the same version intended for that factory.

The launch could happen outside Apple’s main event

If Apple does announce the Mac mini before September 1, that would put it outside the expected September event. Gurman’s report gives a short window, not a confirmed launch plan.
