OpenAI’s first devices may be a screenless speaker and an AI phone

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that OpenAI’s first mass-market device from its Jony Ive-led hardware effort will be a portable, screenless smart speaker. A separate AI-first phone could follow much sooner than previously expected.

The speaker is planned as a new kind of home computer built around ChatGPT. OpenAI has not announced the product, its name, or a launch date.

The speaker is designed to feel more alive

The reported device has a rechargeable battery, a camera and sensors for understanding its surroundings, and mechanical parts that can move on their own. It would use a newer version of ChatGPT’s voice technology to answer questions, play media, control smart-home devices, and respond to messages.

The bigger idea is personalization. Bloomberg says OpenAI wants the speaker to learn about its owner, anticipate needs, and respond more like a companion than a conventional voice assistant.

The Information reported in February that the speaker could cost between $200 and $300 and would not ship before February 2027. OpenAI executive Chris Lehane has separately said the company plans to unveil its first device in the second half of 2026, so a preview could arrive months before sales begin.

The AI phone may now enter production in 2027

Supply-chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims OpenAI has accelerated its phone plans, with mass production now targeted for the first half of 2027. His initial report on OpenAI’s AI phone had pointed to 2028.

Kuo says the phone may use a customized MediaTek Dimensity 9600 processor, two AI processors for vision and language work, LPDDR6 memory, and UFS 5.0 storage. He estimates shipments across 2027 and 2028 could reach roughly 30 million units if development stays on schedule.

The phone is the more ambitious project. Kuo argues that controlling the hardware and operating system would let OpenAI build an agent that understands a user’s location, activity, communication, and other real-time context instead of operating inside the limits of an iPhone or Android app.

OpenAI is building a wider hardware lineup

The Information says OpenAI’s device group has also explored smart glasses and a smart lamp, although some prototypes may never be released. OpenAI has confirmed only the broader hardware effort: the company said the io Products team merged with OpenAI in July 2025, while Ive and LoveFrom took on design responsibilities across the company.

The reported roadmap puts OpenAI into several categories Apple is also exploring. Apple is developing its own AI smart glasses, wearable pin, and camera-equipped AirPods, alongside a Siri-powered smart home hub.

For now, the screenless speaker has the clearer path to market. The phone remains a supply-chain forecast, and neither device has been officially announced.
