WhatsApp is testing a small but noticeable visual update for iPhone users. A new beta release reintroduces message animations and adds a dedicated setting that allows users to decide whether they want the effect enabled or disabled.

The feature is currently available to a limited number of TestFlight beta testers and gives users greater control over how messages appear inside conversations.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp previously removed message animations from its iOS app, causing messages to appear instantly in chats without any visual transition.

The latest beta update brings back animations with a slightly refreshed approach. Instead of appearing immediately, message bubbles now fade in while subtly expanding before settling into place.

The effect is intended to make conversations feel smoother and more dynamic without significantly changing the overall chat experience.

A new toggle lets users disable the feature

WhatsApp is also introducing a dedicated setting for message animations.

The new option appears alongside existing controls for emoji, sticker, and GIF animations, bringing all animation-related settings together in one place.

Users can enable or disable message animations at any time by following these steps:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Select Chats.
  4. Open Animations.
  5. Turn Messages on or off.

The feature is currently rolling out to a small number of TestFlight users. WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp is also testing the same functionality on Android, although the company has not announced a timeline for a broader release.

While there is no official launch date yet, testing on both iPhone and Android often suggests that WhatsApp is considering a wider rollout in a future update.

For users who enjoy subtle interface enhancements, the return of message animations could make chats feel more polished. At the same time, those who prefer a simpler experience will have the option to turn the feature off entirely.
