Apple will fix iPhone 18 Pro Face ID reboot bug with a software update

Some iPhone 18 Pro users see their phone freeze and restart after Face ID fails. Apple says a software fix is coming early next week, but has not named the update.

Apple told 9to5Mac that a software update will fix a bug that makes some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max devices freeze and restart after Face ID fails. The update should arrive early next week, according to 9to5Mac’s report.

The issue appears after a failed Face ID attempt when unlocking a protected app, such as Passwords. The phone can stop responding to touch and restart a few seconds later. 9to5Mac reproduced the problem, but it does not affect every iPhone 18 Pro owner.

Apple has not named the update version. 9to5Mac thinks it may be iOS 27.0.1 based on traffic data, but that remains unconfirmed.

The fix is not available yet. When it arrives, iPhone owners can check Settings → General → Software Update or follow our guide to updating an iPhone to iOS 27.
