OpenAI says ChatGPT’s Siri integration dramatically underperformed

OpenAI says its ChatGPT integration in Apple’s Siri fell short of its user-growth expectations. A September 22 court brief says the company cut its forecast for incremental logged-in weekly active users in January 2025 and described the integration as "persistently underperforming" in March 2026.

OpenAI says the feature was "off to a slow start" in January 2025 and that it lowered its forecast for incremental logged-in weekly active users. The filing does not disclose the forecast, how far the integration missed it, or how many people used it. It also redacts what OpenAI told Apple in March 2026.

OpenAI says the Apple deal was non-exclusive

The brief supports OpenAI’s request for summary judgment in an antitrust case brought by X Corp. and SpaceXAI LLC, formerly xAI. The plaintiffs alleged that Apple’s ChatGPT deal restricted competition. Apple has since been dismissed from the case.

OpenAI says it asked Apple for a mutual two-year exclusivity period, but Apple refused. The signed agreement let Apple add other services with similar features. OpenAI argues the Siri integration’s low usage could not have kept rival chatbots from reaching a meaningful number of users. The court has not ruled on that argument.

The filing covers the Siri extension’s performance through March 2026. Apple’s newer Siri app offers another way to choose ChatGPT during a Siri conversation, but OpenAI has not provided usage figures for that later experience.
