ChatGPT now works with CarPlay, but it’s not as seamless as you’d expect

ChatGPT is coming to CarPlay with voice-only support, letting you interact hands-free while driving.

Explore with AI:

ChatGPT is now available on Apple CarPlay, allowing you to ask questions and interact with it directly from your car’s dashboard.

This comes after Apple opened up CarPlay to third-party voice-based AI apps in iOS 26.4. With this update, ChatGPT becomes one of the first major AI tools to leverage that change.

This only works through voice, by design

ChatGPT on CarPlay

The way ChatGPT works on CarPlay is very controlled. Apple only allows voice-first interaction for AI apps inside CarPlay. That means no long text responses or visual outputs on the screen. Instead, everything is designed around quick, spoken interactions to reduce distractions while driving.

Apps also have to follow a fixed interface. There’s a standard voice control screen, along with a limited number of action buttons. This keeps the experience consistent across apps.

It’s useful, but not fully integrated

The idea sounds simple. You ask a question while driving and get an answer instantly. But there are some clear limitations.

ChatGPT on CarPlay cannot control your car or your iPhone. It works more like a standalone assistant inside the CarPlay interface rather than something deeply integrated into the system.

There’s also no support for wake words. That means you need to manually open the app before using it, which makes it less seamless compared to built-in assistants.

Apple is still keeping tight control

Even though Apple has opened CarPlay to more apps, it still controls what’s allowed.

Only specific categories, such as audio, communication, navigation, and EV charging apps, are supported. AI apps like ChatGPT are now being included, but within strict rules.

This approach keeps distractions low, but it also limits how powerful these apps can be inside a car.

This feels like a first step, not the final experience

ChatGPT coming to CarPlay is a meaningful addition, but it doesn’t fully replace something like Siri yet.

Right now, it works best for quick queries and simple interactions. The lack of deep integration and hands-free activation keeps it from feeling truly native.

Still, it shows where things are heading. AI assistants are slowly making their way into more parts of the system, even if they’re not fully integrated yet.
