How to unlock the X-Ray, Onigiri, and Overshield Sprites in Fortnite

Four brand-new sprites, X-Ray Sprite, Onigiri Sprite, Overshield Sprite, and Mega Man Sprite, along with their variants arrived with the Fortnite v42.10 update last week. Notably, the first two are fan-made sprites created by Avila215 and Enorull respectively and are among the first sprites of their kind to be added.

For those who want a revision, the X-Ray Sprite is the one that lets you occasionally detect enemy locations through walls and other map obstacles. Moreover, the Onigiri Sprite provides an Overdrive Effect for consuming a healing item. Lastly, the Overshield Sprite grants you Overshield that increases as the sprite levels up.

Using cheat codes

Cheat codes have become another go-to way of obtaining sprites in Fortnite since the launch of Chapter 7 Season 4. They are quite similar to chests, except the fact that they exclusively give a single sprite to the player.

The kind of sprite you will unlock heavily depends on the kind of cheat code you encounter and use. There are the blue cheat codes that usually offer a Rare sprite, the purple ones offer at least an Epic-tier sprite, the golden ones offer a Legendary sprite or above, and so on.

For the X-Ray sprite, your best bet is the Legendary cheat code, which is obviously among the hardest to find. Fortunately, the Onigiri and Overshield Sprites are of the rare tier and can be easily obtained from the blue cheat codes that are relatively widespread. As a result, these two sprites are also very commonly dropped by eliminated opponents.

To reveal the locations of nearby cheat codes, you may use the Cheat Code Locator. This item can be obtained for free by using certain Fortnite admin panel codes, including “FindItChat” and “SurviveTheNight.” Alternatively, it can also be bought using Sprite Dust at Extraction Sites.

Going on a chest-opening spree

Another straightforward way of joining the sprite hunt is scouring the map for chests and opening them. Although standard chests may not offer anything beyond weapons, items, and ammo, there are special chests such as the blue-colored Rare Chests that can drop a desirable sprite.

For maximizing the number of chests you stumble upon, it’s advisable to head to locations, such as the Pac-Man islands (based on Pac-Man, Blinky, and Pinky) near the northern and southern parts of the Fortnite Override map. More locations where chests are easily available are the Green Hill Zone, Stone Sanctum, and Reality’s Reign.

If specifically targeting the Rare Chests, you can check out regions such as Cluster Coast, The Battlewoods, and Golden Grove, in addition to Stone Sanctum and the Pac-Man islands. To make sure you don’t miss out on the chests there, it’s best to visit them as early in a match as you can. However, it’s also worth remembering to watch your back in those spots as there are usually several players there during those early stretches.

Indexing the sprite from another player

You don’t necessarily have to find a sprite yourself to be able to extract it and add it your collection. That’s because there is also a more collaborative option in which you can take the help of another player who has a sprite you want. To find such players, Fortnite’s official Discord is among the best places to visit.

For this method, you need to join a match with that player, borrow the sprite, and extract it. Once you have done that, the game will have indexed that particular sprite into your collection. You can then join another match with the same player and return the sprite to him. Afterwards, you can restore the sprite you returned, in the Sprites section of the Override tab, in exchange for some Sprite Dust.
