Apple’s Siri app could turn into an AI hub with Extensions in iOS 27

Apple is preparing a major upgrade for Siri in iOS 27, and it goes beyond just smarter responses.

According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple is working on a dedicated Siri app along with a new “Extensions” system that brings third-party AI tools directly into Siri.

This suggests that Siri is moving closer to becoming a full AI platform rather than just a built-in assistant.

Users will be able to interact with Siri via both text and voice, and access past conversations in a dedicated interface. This is a noticeable shift from the current version, where interactions feel more temporary.

The overall approach sounds similar to apps like ChatGPT and Gemini, where conversations are persistent and easier to manage.

“Extensions” could turn Siri into an AI marketplace

The bigger change here is something Apple is calling Extensions.

Based on internal iOS 27 builds, Extensions will allow third-party AI tools to plug directly into Siri. That means different apps and services could work alongside Siri instead of operating as separate experiences.

Apple is also expected to add a dedicated Extensions section in the App Store, effectively creating a marketplace for AI integrations within the App Store.

This marks a different direction for Apple. Instead of building everything itself, it is opening the system to external AI tools.

Siri is expanding beyond ChatGPT integration

Siri has supported ChatGPT since iOS 18.2.

With Extensions, Apple is expected to go further by supporting additional third-party chatbots. This could include multiple AI services working within the same system, depending on what users install.

That shift makes Siri less dependent on a single AI model and more flexible overall.

A redesigned Siri experience is also coming

Alongside the new app and Extensions, Apple is reportedly working on a broader redesign.

Some of the expected changes include:

A new interface that may integrate with the Dynamic Island.
A system-wide “Ask Siri” button across Apple apps.
A “Write with Siri” option above the keyboard.

These additions suggest that Siri will be more deeply integrated into everyday tasks, rather than something users trigger only occasionally.

Availability is still not fully clear

The first developer beta of iOS 27 is expected to arrive on June 8, following the WWDC26 keynote, with a public release likely in September.

One open question is device compatibility. It is not yet clear whether the new Siri app will be available on all supported devices or only on newer models with Apple Intelligence.
