AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4: Which one should you buy?

AirPods 5 are the better buy for most new shoppers, and the $149 model is the one I’d choose. Apple added Active Noise Cancellation to both models, reworked the acoustic design, and improved durability without changing the open-ear fit.

AirPods 4 still make sense if you find the standard model at a steep discount and don’t need ANC. AirPods 4 with ANC is harder to recommend when AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case costs $30 less at launch and lasts longer with ANC enabled.

ANC is the real AirPods 5 upgrade

AirPods 4 split noise cancellation into two products. The $129 model has no ANC, while the $179 version adds it. AirPods 5 removes that compromise because both models include ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, and Conversation Awareness.

Apple says AirPods 5 reduce up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. That should help on a commute, in a cafe, or during a flight, but open-ear ANC still has limits. Without silicone tips sealing your ear canal, AirPods 5 can’t block sound the way in-ear AirPods Pro 3 can.

If you dislike the plugged-in feeling of silicone tips, AirPods 5 are the more interesting choice. If you want stronger isolation for planes, gyms, or loud offices, look at the AirPods Pro 3 instead.

The fit barely changes

AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 use the same open-ear approach, and Apple lists the same 4.3-gram weight and 30.2 x 18.3 x 18.1mm dimensions for each earbud. AirPods 5 are an internal redesign rather than a new shape.

If AirPods 4 fit securely, AirPods 5 should feel familiar. If your AirPods 4 regularly loosen or fall out, the new model probably won’t solve that open-design problem. Don’t upgrade for comfort without trying them first.

Sound should improve, but wait for independent reviews

AirPods 5 introduce a multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ. Apple says the changes deliver richer, more detailed sound across a wider range of ear shapes. Both generations use the H2 chip, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, and Voice Isolation.

The expected improvement is in tuning and processing, not a new chip or a completely different listening experience. AirPods 5 don’t reach stores until September 18, 2026, so treat Apple’s sound and ANC claims as promises until independent reviews test them.

The $149 model gets the useful extras

With ANC on, standard AirPods 5 match AirPods 4 with ANC at up to 4 hours per charge and 20 hours with the case. AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case increase that to 5 hours per charge and 22 hours with the case.

That $20 upgrade also adds Apple Watch and Qi charging, a speaker for Find My, and volume swipe on the stem. AirPods 4 with ANC already support wireless charging and Find My, but they don’t offer volume swipe and have the older IP54 rating.

The standard AirPods 4 still last longer on paper at 5 hours per charge and 30 hours with the case, but that figure is with noise control off. You get the longer battery by giving up ANC.

Software features are not a reason to upgrade by themselves

AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 with ANC both support Live Translation with current firmware when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later. Supported languages and regions vary, so AirPods 5 don’t have an exclusive advantage here.

New Siri AI also depends on compatible Apple hardware and iOS 27. If you already own AirPods 4, update their firmware before assuming you need new earbuds for software features. Both generations work with non-Apple devices as Bluetooth earbuds, but some features are limited. You’ll get the best experience with a recent iPhone, iPad, or Mac running current software.

Price and availability

Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026. Preorders are open now, and both models arrive in stores on September 18. The U.S. price is $129 for AirPods 5 and $149 for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. In India, Apple lists them at ₹14,900 and ₹17,900, respectively.

AirPods 4 launched at $129, while AirPods 4 with ANC launched at $179. Retailer discounts can change the calculation, especially for the standard AirPods 4. If AirPods 4 with ANC drops well below $149, it becomes a reasonable deal. At similar prices, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case is the better purchase. Apple doesn’t include a USB-C charging cable or power adapter with AirPods 5.

Which AirPods should you buy?

Choose AirPods 5 at $129 if you want ANC, prefer an open fit, and want to spend as little as possible on Apple’s newer features. It is the easiest model to recommend to a first-time buyer.

Choose AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case if you want wireless charging, on-stem volume control, a Find My speaker, or longer battery life. The extra $20 is well spent, making this my pick of the four.

Choose standard AirPods 4 only when it is substantially cheaper and you’re happy to listen without ANC. Its 30-hour case battery is useful, but it has fewer noise-control features.

Choose AirPods 4 with ANC only when a sale puts it clearly below AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. Otherwise, the newer model gives you better claimed ANC, IP57 resistance, longer ANC battery life, and volume swipe for less money at list price.

If you already own AirPods 4, keep them if they fit well and sound good. Upgrade from the standard model for ANC. Upgrade from AirPods 4 with ANC only if better noise reduction, durability, battery life, or stem volume control will make a noticeable difference in daily use.

AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case is the best overall buy. The $129 version is the value pick, while AirPods 4 is worth considering only when a retailer’s discount is large enough to outweigh its older features.
