The HomePod mini 2 is smaller and cheaper, but the Echo Studio does more as a smart home hub and works with Android. Here's how to choose between them.
Most of this decision comes down to two things: which phone you use, and how much speaker you want. The HomePod mini 2 is the small option. It costs $149, weighs 335 g, and sits on a shelf without taking over. The Echo Studio (2025) is the big one. It costs $219.99, weighs 1.63 kg, and doubles as a smart home hub with Zigbee, Thread, and Matter built in.
If you’re on an iPhone and want something small, the HomePod mini 2 is the one I’d look at first. If you’re on Android, or you want bigger sound and a hub that does more, the Echo Studio is the better fit.

The HomePod mini 2 needs an iPhone or iPad for setup, and Apple lists a compatible device as a system requirement. The Echo Studio, on the other hand, works with both Android and iPhone, making it a more flexible choice if your household uses different phone platforms. If you’re on Android and don’t have access to an iPhone or iPad, the HomePod mini 2 isn’t the right option for you.
But compatibility goes beyond initial setup. With the HomePod mini 2, you’ll get the best experience if you’re already invested in Apple’s ecosystem, especially if you use Apple Music, the Home app, and other Apple devices. You can use Siri to control supported smart home accessories, manage music playback, and access other Apple services.
The Echo Studio is a better fit for households that prefer Alexa, use Android phones, or rely on Alexa-compatible smart home devices. You can manage Alexa settings and connected devices through the Alexa app, without needing to own an iPhone.
My take: If you already use an iPhone and other Apple devices, the HomePod mini 2 makes more sense. But if you want a smart speaker that fits into an Android household just as easily, the Echo Studio is the more practical choice. Your existing phone and smart home setup should be the first things you consider before deciding between these two speakers.

The Echo Studio is nearly five times heavier than the HomePod mini 2. Amazon’s 2025 model is about 40% smaller than the original Echo Studio, but it’s still a big speaker that needs a shelf of its own.
Reviews split on bass. Tom’s Guide says the Echo Studio makes a lot of bass for its size. Expert Reviews says the bass isn’t as strong as the original Echo Studio’s, but it calls the speaker better than anything else in Amazon’s range for filling a room, and it praises the wide sound with Dolby Atmos music from Amazon Music.
Reviews of the HomePod mini 2 were hard to find at the time of writing, and Apple doesn’t publish driver size or power. Wait for reviews before you judge its sound against the Echo.
The Echo Studio connects Zigbee devices without a separate bridge, and it handles Thread and Matter too. It also has presence detection built in.
The HomePod mini 2 covers Thread networking for HomeKit and Matter accessories, and it adds temperature and humidity sensors. Apple’s spec page doesn’t list Zigbee, so Zigbee devices need another hub.
The HomePod mini 2’s Sound Recognition listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Apple warns that detection may not be reliable, so keep your real alarms in place.

Alexa+ is live on the Echo Studio today. Amazon says it’s included at no extra cost with Prime. Without Prime, full access costs $19.99 a month, and a limited text chat is free on Alexa.com and in the Alexa app.
Siri AI is still coming to the HomePod mini 2. Apple says it arrives as a free software update, but it hasn’t given a date. The homeowner needs an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad with Siri AI turned on, and it isn’t available in the EU on iOS or iPadOS at first. Don’t buy the HomePod mini 2 for Siri AI alone.
The Echo Studio costs about $70 more than the HomePod mini 2. If sound and size matter more than price, Apple’s closer match is the full-size HomePod, which went from $299 to $349 in June 2026.
Start with your phone, then think about how much room you have. That usually settles it.
