I compared the powerful Apple Watch Ultra 4 to all rounder Series 12 and entry-level SE 3. Here's the best watch for you.
If you’re looking at Apple’s latest Apple Watch lineup and wondering which model actually makes sense to buy in 2026, you are in the right place. This year, Apple introduced a new Health Sensing System, a Readiness score, and Apple Intelligence-powered experiences. Paired with watchOS 27 and longer battery life, all the latest models are one-of-a-kind.
In this article, I’ll share which is the best Apple Watch to buy in 2026 so you can pick the right Apple Watch for your lifestyle, budget, and personal needs. Whether you’re an outdoor adventurer, a casual user, a fitness enthusiast, or buying a watch for your child, there’s a model for you.
Choosing an Apple Watch isn’t just about buying the newest model. I’d first look at how you actually plan to use it.
The current Apple Watch models require an iPhone. Apple says the Apple Watch Series 12, Ultra 4, and SE 3 require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27 or later. Moreover, all Apple Intelligence features, like Siri AI, require pairing with an iPhone 15 Pro or later.
That means I wouldn’t buy one of these watches if you’re still using an older iPhone that doesn’t meet those requirements. Always check Apple Watch and iPhone compatibility before buying.
When selecting a model, consider the target users, from fitness enthusiasts to tech lovers and luxury seekers. So, consider who will be using the watch. For example, the SE 3 is excellent for kids, whereas Series 12 is for elderly users due to its simplicity and health monitoring features.
After Apple’s September 2026 refresh, I’d divide the current lineup this way:
The important thing is that there isn’t a single Apple Watch that makes sense for everyone. The Ultra 4 gives you the most extensive outdoor and battery capabilities, while the Series 12 delivers the latest mainstream health and smartwatch features in a more conventional design.

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is Apple’s flagship sports and adventure watch for 2026.
Key specs
If you’re the type who works out actively, goes on camping trips, or just wants a rugged, powerful watch, grab the Ultra 4. Apple has rebuilt its health sensing around the new Health Sensing System, which enables more frequent heart-rate and HRV measurements. The new Readiness feature is particularly interesting for people who train regularly.
It also gets the S11 chip, improved step tracking, new Audio Intelligence features, and substantially longer battery life, up to 50 hours compared with Ultra 3’s 42 hours. Moreover, the Max Extended Workout mode offers up to 45 hours of battery life for long outdoor runs, walks, and hikes.
I’d also pay attention to its GPS capabilities. Apple says the Ultra 4 has the most accurate on-device GPS, based on its testing against dual-frequency GPS sports watches. With its rugged titanium design, sapphire crystal, brighter 3,000-nit display, 100m water resistance, diving features, satellite connectivity, and Action button, it’s a premium watch.
If I mainly want sports, adventure, durability, and battery advantages, I’d choose Ultra 4.
Pros
Cons
Who should buy the Apple Watch Ultra 4?
If your idea of an adventure is mostly walking around the neighborhood, I’d save the money and look at the Series 12 instead.
Note: Even though Apple has phased it out, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 still remains a capable option with its watchOS 27 support and can be quite economical compared to Ultra 4. You may find it in some selected retail stores, but you should ensure that you buy an original Apple Watch

For the majority of buyers, the Apple Watch Series 12 is the model I’d look at first. It gives you the newest mainstream Apple Watch experience without the size and price of the Ultra 4.
Key specs
The Series 12 is like the sweet spot for most Apple Watch users. I like that Apple has kept the familiar everyday design while adding new finishes, including a ceramic case option, alongside aluminum and titanium. The aluminum models also feature Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60% tougher than the previous Ion-X glass.
Under the hood, Series 12 gets the S11 chip and a new Health Sensing System, enabling more frequent heart-rate and HRV measurements and the new Readiness feature. It also brings Precision L1 GPS, 5G connectivity, and up to 24 hours of battery life. The new single-tap gestures make it easier to interact with the watch without repeatedly touching the screen.
Another upgrade I find interesting is Audio Intelligence. Series 12 can use features such as Sound Recognition, Live Rewind, Siri Recap, and Shazam. The watch also supports Siri AI through watchOS 27, bringing personal context understanding and broader world knowledge to the wrist.
With new colors, premium case options, improved durability, smarter health tracking, and the latest S11 chip, Series 12 is a capable everyday Apple Watch without the larger size, pricier, and rugged focus of the Ultra 4. If you already have a Series 9 or earlier, it’s the perfect upgrade. You may trade it in and receive the Series 12 at a discount.
Pros
Cons
Who should buy the Apple Watch Series 12?
If I were buying an Apple Watch primarily for everyday wear, health tracking, notifications, sleep, and workouts, this is the model I’d compare most closely with the SE 3 before spending more.

The Apple Watch SE 3 remains Apple’s entry-level option. It doesn’t have the complete sensor package of the Series 12 or Ultra 4, but it still gives you many of the Apple Watch basics at a significantly lower price.
Key Specs
The Apple Watch SE 3 is the easiest choice if you want the Apple Watch experience without spending flagship money.
It keeps the familiar lightweight design with 40mm and 44mm aluminum cases, while adding an Always-On Retina display, S10 chip, and 5G connectivity. You also get useful gestures such as single- and double-tap and wrist flick, making everyday interactions quicker without constantly touching the screen.
For health and fitness, SE 3 covers all the essentials along with safety features such as Fall Detection and Crash Detection. However, it doesn’t include the ECG, Blood Oxygen, hypertension notifications, or the full set of heart-sensing features available on Apple’s higher-end models, making the sensor package simpler.
What I like most about SE 3 is that Apple hasn’t made it feel like a stripped-down smartwatch. It still gets watchOS 27, Apple Intelligence-powered Siri AI features, fast charging, and up to 18 hours of battery life. The cellular version also supports 5G, which makes it more useful when I leave my iPhone behind.
If I mainly need notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, safety features, and basic health monitoring, SE 3 gives me the core Apple Watch experience at a much lower starting price.
Pros
Cons
Who should buy the Apple Watch SE 3?
If you’re buying your first Apple Watch and don’t care about the newest health features, the SE 3 is the model I’d start with.
| Use Case | Model to Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First-time Apple Watch buyer | Apple Watch SE 3 | All basic health sensors, safety features, watchOS 27, Siri AI supported |
| Everyday smartwatch use | Apple Watch Series 12 | Latest mainstream model with advanced health tracking and a conventional design |
| Health and fitness tracking | Apple Watch Series 12 | New Health Sensing System, higher-frequency HRV, and Readiness |
| Serious outdoor adventures | Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Rugged titanium design, long battery life, satellite features, and advanced GPS |
| Long-distance running | Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Extended workout modes and up to 45 hours of outdoor workout tracking |
| Diving and water sports | Apple Watch Ultra 4 | 100m water resistance, depth gauge, and water-temperature sensor |
| Budget Apple Watch | Apple Watch SE 3 | Lowest starting price |
| Premium finish | Apple Watch Series 12 | Titanium and ceramic options |
| Maximum battery life | Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Up to 50 hours normally and 84 hours in Low Power Mode |
All Apple Watches have similar basic features and quality standards. However, depending on your needs, you may choose the powerful Apple Watch Ultra 4 or the affordable Apple Watch Series 12.
It’s okay if you want an Apple Watch but cannot afford it. The Apple Watch SE 3 is excellent since not everyone requires blood oxygen and ECG monitoring.
If you’re looking for something premium, consider the Apple Watch Hermès edition. It offers the same functionality as the Series 12, along with exclusive bands and watch faces. Also, Apple announced the Hermès edition for the Ultra 4 model.
Both watches now share several important technologies, including the S11 chip, Health Sensing System, higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV measurements, Readiness, Audio Intelligence, and Siri AI.
The biggest differences are the physical design, battery, durability, GPS, water resistance, and outdoor features.
| Feature | Apple Watch Series 12 | Apple Watch Ultra 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Case | 42mm / 46mm | 49mm titanium |
| Materials | Aluminum/titanium/ceramic | Titanium |
| Display brightness | Up to 2,000 nits | Up to 3,000 nits |
| Battery | Up to 24 hours; up to 38 hours in Low Power mode | Up to 50 hours; up to 84 hours in Low Power mode |
| Outdoor workout | Up to 10 hours | Up to 25 hours / 45 hours Max Extended |
| Water resistance | 50m | 100m |
| GPS | Precision L1 GPS | Precision dual-frequency GPS |
| 5G | Yes | Yes |
| Health Sensing System and Readiness | Yes | Yes |
| Audio Intelligence | Yes | Yes |
| Starting price | $399 (GPS) | $799 (GPS + Cellular) |
I wouldn’t recommend buying a very old Apple Watch simply because it is cheap. Models several generations old can miss newer health features, have shorter remaining software support, weaker battery health, and compatibility limitations.
If you’re buying new in 2026, I’d avoid the following models:
If you find a refurbished Apple Watch like Series 11 or Ultra 3 model at a substantial discount, check its battery health, warranty, software compatibility, and which health features it actually supports before buying.
Apple’s 2026 Apple Watch lineup is easier to understand than it might initially seem.
The biggest change this year is that Apple’s newest health features aren’t exclusive to the Ultra. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 both use the new Health Sensing System, giving mainstream users access to higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV measurements and Readiness.
For me, that makes the Series 12 particularly interesting because the decision is no longer simply about buying the most expensive Apple Watch to get Apple’s newest health technology. The Ultra 4 earns its premium through its rugged design, battery endurance, GPS, water resistance, and outdoor capabilities.
And if those features don’t matter to you, the SE 3 gives you a much cheaper way into the Apple Watch ecosystem.
The best Apple Watch is ultimately the one that matches how you actually use your wrist every day, not necessarily the one with the biggest case or longest list of specifications. So, which Apple Watch fits your lifestyle best?
