Apple Maps is getting ads, and it changes how you discover places

Apple Maps is getting ads alongside a new Suggested Places feature, meaning paid listings could now appear before the most relevant results.

Apple just confirmed it is bringing ads to Apple Maps this summer. At the same time, it is introducing a new feature called Suggested Places, which helps surface trending spots nearby.

On paper, Suggested Places sounds useful. In reality, I cannot ignore the fact that it also creates another space for ads inside Maps.

Ads are officially coming to Apple Maps

According to Apple’s announcement, businesses in the US and Canada will soon be able to promote themselves directly inside Maps.

Here is how it will work:

  • Ads will appear at the top of search results.
  • They may also show up inside Suggested Places.
  • Apple says ads will be clearly labeled.

From a user perspective, this means the first result I see when searching for something might no longer be the most relevant, but the highest bidder.

Suggested Places feels useful, but there is a catch

Suggested Places is Apple’s attempt to make Maps feel more dynamic. It will show recommendations based on:

  • What’s trending nearby.
  • My recent searches.
  • Other contextual signals.

If this works well, I can see most users using it when I am m in a new city and don’t know where to go. That kind of discovery layer has been missing in Apple Maps for a long time.

But here is the issue I keep coming back to. The feature is also tied to ads.

This is Apple catching up to Google Maps

If you have used Google Maps, this will feel very familiar. Google has offered similar discovery features for years, surfacing popular places, trending spots, and personalized recommendations. Apple is clearly moving in the same direction.

The difference is that Apple Maps has always felt cleaner and less commercial. That is one of the main reasons I have stuck with it.

Why I am not fully sold on this update yet

I have used Apple Maps daily, and the biggest reason I have stuck with it is how clean and uncluttered it feels compared to alternatives. This update changes that.

Even if Apple keeps ads subtle, they still add friction to what used to be a premium, distraction-free experience. Suggested Places could be genuinely useful when I am m exploring a new area, but the fact that ads sit at the top will always influence what I see first.

Realistically, most users will adapt if the recommendations are good. Convenience usually wins. But for me, this is the first time Apple Maps feels like it is moving away from what made it stand out in the first place.

Would Suggested Places change how you explore nearby spots, or not really? I’d like to hear your take.
