• Audio stays intact: A video without sound is usually useless.
• Few steps: It should not be too complicated or time-consuming.
• No watermark: There’s little reason for a downloader to stamp its own branding onto someone else’s video.
• No X password required: This is a major red flag. A downloader should not need your X login.
• Reasonable privacy: I’m much more comfortable with tools that don’t ask for unnecessary permissions or personal information.

One more thing: “free” doesn’t always guarantee quality service. Sometimes free downloader websites are loaded with ads, fake download buttons, and pop-ups. Convenience isn’t worth compromising your device or privacy.

Top 5 ways I download videos from X (Twitter)

Not all tools work best across iPhone, Android, Windows, and Mac. So, I have shared different methods for different users.

Method 1: Native download – My first choice if you have X Premium

Best for: X Premium subscribers who want the simplest and most official option.

This is the method I’d try because it’s the simplest, safest, and most straightforward way to save an X video directly from the post. You don’t need a third-party video downloader, browser extension, or separate app.

X currently allows Premium (blue tick) subscribers to download videos from certain posts in original quality, provided the creator hasn’t disabled downloads. The best part is that the saved video appears directly in the iOS Photos app, rather than in the Offline section of the X app.

First, let’s see how to do this on the mobile app:

1. Open X and find the post containing the video.
2. Tap the video to open it in the full-screen view.
3. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
4. You will see a Download video option if the creator has enabled it. Select it and wait for the process to finish.
   
5. Find the saved video in your device’s Photos or Camera Gallery.

Bonus: You can also save videos sent to you in direct messages if the sender has enabled it. Simply open the chat, tap and hold the video, and select Download video. However, if the option is missing, the feature has not yet rolled out to you.

If you mostly use the app on your desktop, follow these steps:

1. Hover your mouse over the video on your X feed.
2. Click the gear icon in the playback controls and select Download video.
3. Sometimes the video opens in a new tab instead of automatically starting the download. In that case, click the three-dot icon in the playback controls > Download.
   

However, note that not all X videos can be downloaded this way. Creators can disable video downloads, the post may contain age-restricted content, or the video might be from a private account. X also states that the videos posted before July 25, 2023, cannot be saved using this feature.

My rating: 10/10 for Premium users when the download button is available.

Method 2: Save X (Twitter) videos on iPhone using iOS Shortcuts

Best for: iPhone and iPad users who regularly download X videos.

As I’m an iPhone user and the native X download isn’t available, this is the method I reach for. The big advantage is that the downloader lives inside Apple’s Shortcuts app. Instead of opening a sketchy website every time, I can share the X post directly to a shortcut and save the video to Photos.

TVDL is a good option because it lets you select the video quality and provides shortcut updates that help with smooth operations. Shortcuts’ reliability can vary depending on changes to X and the shortcut’s underlying extraction method.

Overall, this method is my favorite free option for iPhone. I don’t have to keep an X video downloader website bookmarked or install a separate downloader app. The only downside is obvious: this is an Apple-centric solution. It isn’t the answer for Android users.

My rating: 9.5/10 on iPhone.

Method 3: Use trusted third-party X/Twitter video downloader apps

Best for: people who prefer using an app rather than a browser or Shortcut.

A dedicated app can make sense if you regularly save videos and want a more repeatable workflow.

For iPhone, you can try apps like TweetSave to save Tweet/X videos, photos, and GIFs to your Photos. Its basic workflow is simple: copy the post URL, paste it into the app, and process the content.

For Android users, apps such as TwiTake work similarly to iOS Shortcuts. No need to copy-paste links. Tap the share button under the video post, select Share via, and choose TwiTake from the options.

Here’s how I use the TweetSave app:

1. Open X and find the video.
2. Tap the Share button and select Copy Link.
3. Open the downloader app.
   
4. Paste the X video URL and tap Find.
5. Check if the right video is fetched. Tap Save to download it.
6. Once done, tap OK and check the resulting media in your Photos app.
   

The biggest advantage is convenience if you download X videos frequently. However, I wouldn’t install an unknown downloader. Check the developer, reviews, permissions, and update history first.

However, if an app asks for your X password just to download a public video, that’s my cue to leave.

My rating: 7.5/10, but only when the app has a trustworthy developer and sensible permissions.

Method 4: Online tools to download X/Twitter videos on Mac or PC

Best for: one-off downloads when you don’t want to install anything.

This is the classic method for browser-based downloads on mobile and desktop.

For example, SSSTwitter currently supports public X posts and offers SD/HD options. But it shows ads for higher-quality downloads.

The one I personally like best is X Downloader. It allows downloading multiple videos, broadcasts, and GIFs from posts and comments together in full HD and 4K without watermarks.

You can even extract the video’s soundtrack as an MP3. To safeguard your privacy, the tool doesn’t redirect to sketchy websites and streams the file directly to your device from X’s content delivery network.

1. Open X and copy the link to the video you want to download.
2. Open the downloader website in your preferred browser.
3. Paste the X post URL and tap Download Video.
4. Select the available video quality.
5. Rename the file if you want and save the MP4.
   

If you are using this on your iPhone or Android, the saved video goes to the Files app rather than the Photos app.

For a single video, it’s hard to beat. There’s no installation and no setup. It works in a browser, which makes it useful on Android, iPhone, Windows, and Mac.

However, don’t enter your account, payment details, or sensitive information. Watch for misleading buttons, pop-ups, redirects, and requests to install unrelated software.

My rating: 8/10 for occasional downloads; 5/10 if you use downloader sites every day.

Method 5: Chrome extensions for one-click downloads

Best for: desktop users who download X videos very often.

When you are saving several videos from X, constantly copying and pasting links becomes a nuisance. A Chrome extension can put the download function closer to the video itself.

The idea is simple:

1. Install a reputable X video downloader extension, such as Twitter Downloader.
2. Open X in Chrome.
3. Find the video.
4. You will see a Download button next to the share icon. Tap it and save the file.
   

Once configured, it can be considerably faster than opening a separate website for every video.

But extensions get one big warning from me: browser extensions have permissions. Before installing one, check the publisher, what permissions it requests, whether it’s actively maintained, and whether reviews look legitimate. Also, downloading videos very frequently can lead to your account being blocked. So, be cautious!

My rating: 8/10 for heavy desktop users.

Which method should you choose?

If you just want the short version, here’s how I’d rank the five methods:

If I had to recommend one free method to the average iPhone user, I’d pick a reputable iOS Shortcut such as TVDL.

If I had X Premium and the post offered a “Download video” option, I’d skip everything else and use X’s own button.

Common problems and how to fix them

1. There is no Download video option

This usually means the post isn’t eligible for X’s native download feature, the creator has disabled downloads, or you’re not using an account with the required Premium access.

Try an appropriate third-party method for a public post, such as an iOS Shortcut or an online downloader.

2. The downloader says no video found

First, make sure you copied the post URL, not the account/profile URL. Ensure the link is complete, not broken. If that’s correct, the video might have been made private or deleted.

Try another tool or wait a bit and retry.

3. Downloaded video has no sound

Try another available quality or download option. Some third-party services can fail to combine video and audio correctly.

If one downloader gives you a silent file, I don’t waste much time fighting it—I try a different reputable method.

4. Video quality is terrible

Don’t select the smallest file without thinking twice.

If there are multiple resolutions available, choose the highest one. A 480p file may download quickly, but it won’t magically offer the original clarity.

5. The video won’t download from a private account

That’s expected for many third-party services. Tools such as SSSTwitter explicitly state that they support public posts rather than private-account videos.

Don’t look for a supposed “private video bypass.” That’s exactly the sort of rabbit hole I avoid.

6. The iOS Shortcut stopped working

This is one of the biggest realities of social-media downloaders: they can break when the platform rules change. TVDL itself warns of such potential impact and suggests updating the shortcut as well.

If it doesn’t work, temporarily switch to another legitimate method.

Safety and privacy tips

This is the part I wouldn’t skip just because you’re in a hurry to save a funny video.

• Never give a downloader your X password: A public video URL shouldn’t require your X credentials. If a website says “Log in with X to download,” I would close it.
• Watch for fake download buttons: Some downloader websites surround the actual download link with advertisements that look like buttons. If clicking “Download” suddenly opens another website, don’t blindly continue.
• Avoid random APK files: Android gives you plenty of flexibility, but that’s not a reason to sideload an unknown downloader from a random website. Use reputable app stores and verify the developer.

For X Premium members, I would use X’s built-in “Download video” option every time it appears. It’s the cleanest and most trustworthy route. As for iPhone owners, I would prefer an iOS Shortcut like TVDL. It transforms the unpleasant process into two clicks and saves the video directly to Photos.

For saving multiple videos together, an online X video downloader is convenient because there’s nothing to install. And for desktop power users, a reputable Chrome extension can make repeated downloads much faster.

The main takeaway? Do not pick a downloader on the promise of “the fastest 4K downloads.” Select the one that is functional, doesn’t ask for your X password, protects your privacy, and doesn’t make you struggle with ten fake download buttons.
